New Year, Same Old Me

I don’t really have much to say at all. I just feel I should use this space more often.

So what’s happening lately?

  • I’m starting a set of nights today… Only they didn’t have cover from 17:00-21:00 tonight, so I’m doing a 17:00-9:00 shift today
  • Meeting my supervisor in the morning to go over the craptastic ePortfolio, which is a piece of shit way of documenting your work throughout training so that you can “graduate” when the time comes
  • Flying out in a week – to Canada – I can’t wait!
  • I’m getting close to reaching my personal goal of having reduced my educational debts to half. Yes, HALF! This is something else I can’t wait for!
  • I must work on my to-do list… it’s just so hard to get started
  • I’ve slowly created another locum wishlist… this is pretty and expensive toys I want but should not dip into my regular budget for, therefore I work extra shifts to afford extra things
  • Recently I’ve extended my domain name subscriptions and hosting… I can’t remember was I was paying before but I feel like prices have skyrocketed! And I didn’t have the lovely option of paying for a domain name for 10 years in advance like I have with others.

I think that’s it. I had started making a theme a few years ago… It’s still sitting on my desktop with a few PHP kinks I need to work out. At this rate, I don’t even know what’s new in the world of PHP so my theme may be completely outdated… I’ve got an exam coming up in April/May, but maybe after that I can start coding again.

It’s Electrifying!

About a week ago, my UK-to-US wall adapter got stuck in the outlet. After some feeble attempts to pull it out, I realized it was stuck for good and I wasn’t getting it out that way anytime soon.

I knew my only option was to unscrew the contraption and take a look at what was behind. My oh my! I didn’t think it was going to be so much work! I unscrewed the front plate and then noticed that the outlet was still attached to three wires going into the wall. So I proceeded to unscrew those – voila! I held a rather dusty outlet in my hand.

Of course, I tried to pull out the adapter once again. It wasn’t budging! And behind the plate, all the lovely plates for circuitry were stuck behind another black plastic covering. So I figured, “I’ll just unscrew the next part and hopefully I can pop the adapter out from the inside.”

So I unscrewed the black plastic…. And then everything fell apart….

outlet

Everything. Fell. Apart. On the bright side, I saw that my adapter was being blocked by a piece of wiring, so I loosened that up and out came my adapter. But my new problem now was that pictured above.

Believe you me, I spent hours staring at this thing and trying to piece everything back together. I tried Google Image search for answers! I tried plain ol’ Google too! Nothing!

I kept brainstorming and came up with the easy way out – just buy a new outlet cover! There’s no way I would ever be able to piece this thing back together (and then screw on the black plastic covering without disrupting everything). Amazon did have fancy ones that included USB ports too (unavailable, however, otherwise I totally would have bought one)! I ended up finding one at Wilko’s for like £3.

I thought it was all going to be over. However, the tricky part now was fitting those wall wires into the right slots on the new outlet and trying not to electrocute myself. And these wires were short and stiff! But after a good half hour or so, I did it! Everything is good again. I’m such a great handy(wo)man 🙂

What to do?

I’m currently supposed to be studying. For what? I’m not too sure… Meanwhile, I’ve been thinking about my blog. I have to admit that I haven’t been using it as often as I’d like to, so that’s my fault really.

I’ve had a layout in the works for months now! I started working on it probably in late May, and then took a hiatus from it since July. There are some PHP kinks I tried to work out to no avail. And so I kind of gave up. Ok… not really gave up. Life got in the way.

And while I’d like to work on my layout and finish it up, I can only foresee that life will continue to get in the way. This week I’ve got something big coming up, which I will hope to blog about eventually. For now, there’s this.

I would like to eventually write about work – the kind of work I do, the patient’s I see – but I have to figure out how I can do this in a HIPAA-friendly manner. Not sure what kinds of privacy exists in this country, but I’m obviously going to try my best to comply with keeping as patients are safe and anonymized as possible. Perhaps I will just blog about what I’ve learned over the week. I don’t know… But I do know I need to start writing again.

I Got Hitched!

That’s right! I’m married to my best friend. After 10 years of dating, 4 years in a long-distance relationship, we’re ready to start our lives together. We tied the knot mid-June after planning and putting everything together over the previous 6 months. I wanted to post earlier, but we just got our pictures from the photographer (ugh – who I personally have something against) now and I really wanted to throw something into the post.

Good Karma

The other day I was on my way to the gym – I got out of my car and noticed something that looked like a tablet on the ground. Of course, my curiosity got the best of me so I picked up this gigantic block, flipped it around, and lo and behold, someone’s smartphone.

I have to admit that two thoughts ran through my head at that point:

Oh, the poor sap that lost this phone. They must be feeling like shit right now. They probably have everything on this phone like most people do these days.

Just take it. Pocket it right now. Bring it home, reset it and sell it off on Kijiji or Craigslist. Make some money. The fool was dumb enough to lose their phone in the first place, and you could really use the extra cash.

I just remembered how awful it felt when I lost/broke my iPhones in the past, so deep down inside, I knew the right thing to do was to return it. Luckily, they had an email posted on their home screen, so I sent the person an email and told them I found their phone and I could meet them after the gym to return it.

When I finished my workout (aka Zumba ), I checked my email and saw the the guy I emailed responded and was willing to meet. I returned his phone, and honestly I didn’t expected anything in return, but he was so grateful, he gave me a Tim Horton‘s gift card. Woo hoo! That just goes to show that no good deed goes unpunished.
